THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE
WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?
Bowen Therapy, or the Bowen Technique as it's also known, is a very gentle soft tissue remedial therapy. It uses a gentle rolling-type move of the thumbs and forefingers over soft tissue at very precise points on the body and is designed to stimulate the tissue and nerve pathways, creating a focus for the brain. Between each set of moves, the therapist allows for short breaks to allow the communication process to take place and the body to assimilate and respond to the information it has just received.
WHAT ARE THE KEY POINTS?
-
Clothing can stay on.
-
There is no forceful manipulation or adjustment.
-
It is different from massage.
-
The experience of Bowen is gentle, subtle and relaxing. This is what makes the Bowen Technique unique.
-
Relief is regularly felt immediately.
-
Many cases respond within 48 hours.
-
Chronic conditions may take longer than the average 3/4 sessions.

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
A session lasts up to 60 minutes, although please allow longer for the first session which includes a full consultation with me where I will take a detailed medical history, including any medication that you are currently taking. We will discuss the key issues you are hoping that Bowen can support you with, identifying markers which we can record to help monitor your progress. The treatment itself consists of specific, gentle rolling moves across soft tissue, often through light clothing. Unique breaks are incorporated into the treatment where you are left to rest whilst the body is given time to assimilate the information it has just received.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BOWEN THERAPY?
Its simplicity and effectiveness makes Bowen suitable for all ages including babies and the very elderly and it can be used throughout pregnancy.
Increasing numbers of health and sports professionals are turning to the Bowen Technique to treat muscular, skeletal or nerve imbalance, injury, chronic conditions or acute or chronic pain.
Athletes and dancers use Bowen Technique because it can increase flexibility and reduce muscle pain and fatigue.

AFTERCARE
Initially the treatments are scheduled between 5 and 7 days apart and a set of 2 or 3 is usually recommended. Acute conditions can respond immediately; chronic conditions may take longer. You will be given full aftercare instructions at your initial consultation.
We ask that you don't have any other bodywork whilst on a course of Bowen and this will be discussed at the first appointment, although do please get in touch if you have any questions.

MY BOWEN JOURNEY

My background is in journalism and television regulation but when my children were young, I moved into special needs education to fit around their many and varied needs. At the same time I trained in Holistic Massage and Indian Head Massage. I was introduced to the Bowen Technique around 10 years ago when my son was very unwell with repeated and quite severe chest infections and I was amazed by how such a gentle therapy could have such a profound effect on his wellbeing. In the ensuing years we turned to Bowen as a family with various ailments from bad backs, sciatic pain, clicky jaws and period pains to sinus problems and hayfever. Then someone very close to me was diagnosed with a chronic condition and he found that regular Bowen sessions kept the associated aches and pains at bay. It was then that I decided to qualify with the College of Bowen Studies in order that he could receive Bowen as often as he needed. During my training, it very quickly became apparent from the results I was witnessing, that this was not a therapy that I should be keeping to myself and am delighted to be able to offer it from my treatment room on the outskirts of Bidborough in Tunbridge Wells in Kent.
I am always happy to talk about Bowen Therapy and also to discuss how it might be able to help you and your friends and family.
